Sleep Apnea Treatment

Before initiating sleep apnea treatment, it’s important to undergo a comprehensive clinical exam evaluating the compromised airway. Treating the collapsed airway prior to a proper evaluation is counter-intuitive. The TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of Metro Detroit can address your sleep apnea issue and provide a customized solution based on your specific symptoms and a 3D scan of your head.

Once we have a better idea of how your sleep apnea is occurring, we can recommend treatment. It all starts with a free consultation, a home sleep study and a 3D scan to make the initial diagnosis, after which time sleep apnea treatment in Southeast Michigan can begin.

To get started, call Dr. Roman Sadikoff at the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of Metro Detroit.

Common Types of Sleep Apnea Treatment in Michigan

The sleep apnea treatment we suggest will depend largely on the type of sleep apnea you have. In the event you suffer from mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), we will recommend either a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine or oral appliance therapy. In the event you suffer from severe OSA, we will recommend CPAP therapy sleep apnea treatment in Michigan.

CPAP Therapy

This involves the use of a mask on your face to be worn at night. It blows air via positive pressure through the nasal passages to keep the airway from collapsing. You use the mask and machine all night, adding distilled water which humidifies the air. These machines are not custom made; rather, they are prefabricated.

Many of the patients we see here at the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of Metro Detroit have already been diagnosed from a previous doctor but have found they cannot tolerate wearing a CPAP device, as it can be rather invasive. They are seeking a more effective sleep apnea treatment so they can finally get relief. In this case, we recommend the use of a custom oral appliance.

Oral Appliance Therapy

A customized oral appliance is also designed to prevent the collapse of your airway but it’s a much less invasive approach. You wear it like a retainer, at night only, as it stabilizes your lower jaw, tongue and soft palate. Oral appliance therapy has been found to be extremely effective in treating patients who suffer from mild to moderate sleep apnea. This doesn’t mean you can’t try an oral appliance if you have severe sleep apnea and can’t tolerate a CPAP machine. We can craft an oral appliance that positions the lower jaw and tongue in such a way as to provide optimal airflow.

The two most important factors contributing to success with CPAP and/or oral appliance therapy include nasal patency (how well you can breathe through the nose) and BMI (body mass index).

We will always attempt non-surgical, conservative sleep apnea treatment in Southeast Michigan first. If these options do not work, Dr. Roman Sadikoff will then explore surgical options with you to best manage your OSA. Such surgical procedures may involve the nose, soft palate and tongue, with repositioning of the upper and lower jaws.
